In The Spotlight: The History of A. Lange and Sohne
A. Lange and Sohne, a brand redefining luxury with innovative, yet historically rooted, contemporary watches.
The founding
A. Lange and Sohne was founded in 1845 in Glashutte, Germany by Ferdinand Adolph Lange. From its earliest days, the brand was committed to the highest standards of craftsmanship, producing watches of exceptional quality for the Saxon royal court.
Nationalisation and rebirth
The brand was nationalised after World War II when Glashutte fell under East German control. For four decades, A. Lange and Sohne effectively ceased to exist as an independent entity. It was only after German reunification in 1990 that Walter Lange — Ferdinand Adolph Lange's great-grandson — revived the brand.
The 1994 revival
In October 1994, A. Lange and Sohne presented four new watches that immediately established the brand as one of the finest in the world. The Lange 1, with its asymmetric dial and outsize date, became an instant icon.
What makes Lange special
Every A. Lange and Sohne movement is assembled twice — once to check quality, then disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled for final delivery. This level of dedication to perfection is what separates Lange from virtually every other watchmaker.
The collection today
Today, A. Lange and Sohne produces a range of watches that represent the very pinnacle of German watchmaking. From the Lange 1 to the Zeitwerk and the Datograph, each model is a masterpiece of horological engineering.
